Sizing Steam Traps Correctly

Selecting the right size steam trap for an HVAC system is important to ensure the system operates efficiently (an oversized trap will operate less efficiently and will likely create irregular back pressure than a correct sized one) and does not cause damage and require HVAC repairs down the road.  Your installation cost will be higher to replace a busted steam trap and the life expectancy of the new part will be reduced.

Information regarding the proper size of steam trap you need for your pipes is offered by manufacturers to help make it easier to select the correct size steam trap.  This information is based on on hot condensation under actual operating conditions rather than cold-water ratings.  You should always try to determine the basis for a manufacturer’s rating if possible. Below is an example of a sizing chart from a manufacturer of steam traps.

Steam Trap Maintenance

When steam traps leak or fail, it can cause costly damages or require sophisticated repairs. You should always wait for the steam trap to cool before disassembling, repairing or cleaning. When working on your steam trap, try and isolate the return and supply lines to allow the pressure to normalize. If  you need to repair your steam trap, look for a repair kit offered by the manufacturers.  They often supply repair kits for current and discontinued models.

If you are not sure what is wrong with your steam trap, hiring a heating and air conditioning contractor can help.  They have tools that are able to use a sound analysis that will be able to locate leaking or blowing.  Depending on the size of your trap, it may be less expensive to replace it all together.  Your contractor will be able to help you with this.  It is very important to tend to the trap right away as your efficiency will drop dramatically.
